Counseling with Children

Children are not little grown ups. Their bodies and minds are still growing. Children’s brains develop on a predictable schedule and sequence. Everything that occurs during key developmental periods affects them. this can be expressed through behaviors, emotions, or developmental delays among other things. They are not able to process feelings verbally and often do not know what they are feeling or why they do certain things. The language of childhood is play and creativity. I use play therapy, art therapy, sandplay therapy, and other non-verbal techniques to help children process their issues in a very gentle and non-threatening way.

I have advanced training in neurodevelopment which is the foundation for good mental health. When I am working with children I am focused on being sensitive to their developmental level. I also include parents in the process to help them understand their children and support their specific needs.
